Dear Friends,
I am going to list some items which you might have heard already from our media.
It is estimated that there are now over 10,000 foreign relief workers in Haiti. Some of them have come with little or no preparation and therefore are now being taken care of by the very organizations that are there to help Haitians. This is now impeding some organizations from doing their work.
Violence and rioting is increasing, and several organizations whose buildings are still standing have had to evacuate them as they need protection from the unruly crowds and even patients. They are now working not in their area nor with their people but as part of the whole at the new make-shift airport. It is obvious that those who intend to go to Haiti must do their “due diligence” and make sure they are planning carefully as to their own personal needs and where they will function with safety. Our brethren seem to have done some very good planning as the first team has now been in Haiti for several days.
This update is as of the above date and is from the Dominican brethren –
The brethren have decided to work with a Christian group whom we know and trust in Haiti. This group has been in the country a full week. Because we are going under their auspices we have full permission to operate as a medical team. They will put us to work immediately with a group of Christians who are in great need. That way we will waste no time in getting the most out of the medical team. Some other groups are expending a lot of time simply finding a place to get organized. This will also immediately provide us with a safe place for the first team to stay.
We have purchased all the necessary items, food, water, some medical items for the second team.
We have established a separate bank account here in Santo Domingo strictly for the Haitian earthquake victims and projects. It will be managed and carefully controlled by elders and accountants chosen from different assemblies here in the capital. We want to be completely transparent in our dealings. We know that because we will be handling funds on an international level [from different countries] we will be questioned as to how the monies were spent. The fact that people from different assemblies make up the group, will also make the different fellowships feel that they are very much a part of the projects.
We [Second team] will be leaving at 5:00 a.m. from Santo Domingo on Saturday for Jimani. This is a 5 hour trip. From there we will proceed to Port of Prince and expect to arrive there around 2:00 p.m. [4 hrs]We will not be staying in Haiti due to safety reasons but will be returning to the border by nightfall.
Please pray for us as we go in. There are some young doctors on this team, who think that it is somewhat of a tourist trip and it will be easy. I have explained to them that this is a mission trip and there will sacrifices to be made.
Because I am not medical I will see if there is a place there in Port of Prince where I can email you some pictures directly from our location.
Again in no way is this intended to be a solicitation for funds. It is intended to maintain believers informed as to the movements and work that we are supporting through the Dominican brethren who are so capable and familiar with the Haitian people.
